Rod Phillips, the Dork, often pulls back the veil on the “bureaucracy of booze” in this province. It turns out the B.C. government plans to recreate that same system when recreational cannabis is legalized in 2018. Rod critiques the decision.

Rod breaks down which wine regions see a lot of variation from year to year and which ones don’t. Here are a few wine regions discussed that produce consistent wines year after year (with the caveat that there are always exceptions):

Portugal: Anything from the Douro Valley and further south

Short story: a coming Supreme Court of Canada case may shake up the way the liquor industry works in the country. What’s it all about?
Five small BC wineries have been granted permission to intervene by the Supreme Court of Canada in the inter-provincial shipping of liquor case R. v. Comeau. The Supreme Court will hear the case in early December 2017. Rod and Ryan interview lawyer Shea Coulson, of Coulson Litigation, who will speak for 50th Parallel Estate, Liquidity Wines, Noble Ridge Vineyard and Winery, Okanagan Crush Pad Winery and Painted Rock Estate Winery.

Booze In The News covers the wildfires in wine regions of California, Portugal, and Spain, plus we get an update on other ways this year’s weather has impacted wine. In other news, did you know you’re not allowed to buy alcohol in one province and take it home to another province? That’s a thing. And, it’s being challenged in court as unconstitutional.
Plus, we talk about a couple of specific wines: Beaumont Family Estates 2012 Gamay Noir from the Okanagan, and Remy Ferbras 2015 Costieres de Nimes from France.

For the record here’s the recipe Ryan cobbled together to make 1 gallon (no guarantee this will be good!):
5 lbs pitted purple plums
2 lbs washed blackberries
3 litres boiling water (I should have put in a bit less)
2.25 lbs white sugar
1 tsp pectic enzyme
1 crushed campden tablet (potassium metabisulfite)
Let sit for a day
1 tsp yeast nutrient
1/2 tsp acid blend (citric acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid)
1 packet wine yeast (this seemed like a lot, but no disaster yet)
One of the three biggest corporations involved in Canada’s wine industry, Andrew Peller Limited (which owns several brand names and labels, including Peller Estates) has purchased three iconic B.C. VQA wineries: Tinhorn Creek, Black Hills, and Grey Monk. The Dork, who is Uncorked, describes this as a seismic shift in the province’s wine industry. We talk about what it could mean.
Speaking of wineries owned by major corporations, we get into a “case” study on 5 Vineyards, an entry level label produced by the Okanagan’s Mission Hill Winery(itself owned by another of the major wine corporations, Mark Anthony Brands International). Specifically, we compare the 5 Vineyards Chardonnay to the Tinhorn Creek Chardonnay, Both from the Okanagan, both good, both offer examples of terroir differences, but one at a more accessible price point.
And the Pick of the Week is the Cotes du Rhone “Le Dome du Grand Bois” for about $20.
