A beer episode with special guest Joe Wiebe. We look at what’s new in local craft beer as we shift into winter brews, update the local industry as more breweries prepare to open, and discuss coming beer related events.
The special guest “Pick of the Week”: The Oktoberfest Flammenbeer, which is a collaboration between Swans Brewery and White Sails Brewing that was winner of the BC Beer Award’s Best in Show Award. It’s a special brew and might be hard to find, so don’t wait. Bonus pick – Vancouver Island Breweries Hermannator is out for the Christmas season.
The long promised examination of Portuguese wines, a wine country we talk about all the time because if its great wines at amazing values.
The Portugal themed Pick of the Week: Aveleda Vinho Verde. Find it at some private liquor stores around Victoria for approximately $14:99. Try it with white fish.
As a bonus, we discussed a few of our other favs from this part of the world: Periquita Red, the Casal Garcia Rosé, Dão, Paxis Red Blend, Pedras do Monte, and Ramos Pinto. Watch for all those names when you start exploring Portugal.
Short story: a coming Supreme Court of Canada case may shake up the way the liquor industry works in the country. What’s it all about?
Five small BC wineries have been granted permission to intervene by the Supreme Court of Canada in the inter-provincial shipping of liquor case R. v. Comeau. The Supreme Court will hear the case in early December 2017. Rod and Ryan interview lawyer Shea Coulson, of Coulson Litigation, who will speak for 50th Parallel Estate, Liquidity Wines, Noble Ridge Vineyard and Winery, Okanagan Crush Pad Winery and Painted Rock Estate Winery.
Also, there’s a pick of the week: the Giacondi Sangiovese-Merlot from Italy, 1-litre for $8.99.
Booze In The News covers the wildfires in wine regions of California, Portugal, and Spain, plus we get an update on other ways this year’s weather has impacted wine. In other news, did you know you’re not allowed to buy alcohol in one province and take it home to another province? That’s a thing. And, it’s being challenged in court as unconstitutional.
Plus, we talk about a couple of specific wines: Beaumont Family Estates 2012 Gamay Noir from the Okanagan, and Remy Ferbras 2015 Costieres de Nimes from France.
0:00 – 33:24: Warning! This week’s episode takes a detour into home wine making. The “Dork Uncorked” Rod Phillips drops some knowledge as co-host Ryan Price tells of how he attempted to make wine out of his backyard plums and blackberries.
33:24 – 39:00: Why did Ryan smell an aroma of “latex glove” from an Okanagan Pinot Noir?
39:00 – 42:38: Rod’s “Pick of the Week.” It’s a Sake called Hakutsuru Superior Junmai Ginjo.
For the record here’s the recipe Ryan cobbled together to make 1 gallon (no guarantee this will be good!):
5 lbs pitted purple plums
2 lbs washed blackberries
3 litres boiling water (I should have put in a bit less)
2.25 lbs white sugar
1 tsp pectic enzyme
1 crushed campden tablet (potassium metabisulfite)
Let sit for a day
1 tsp yeast nutrient
1/2 tsp acid blend (citric acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid)
1 packet wine yeast (this seemed like a lot, but no disaster yet)
0:00 – 24:50: This show’s mission is to find great wine for affordable prices, usually under $20. But the California section of the liquor store is proving to be a challenge for co-host Ryan. The under $20 range is filled with big brands from huge producers that — while safe and consistent — aren’t knocking our socks off. The Dork tries to help.
24:50 – 36:27: A listener question about the Radio Boca Garnacha in the 3-litre box (recommended in the wedding episode) gets us into the Radio Boca Tempranillo. And THAT gets us into the tempranillo varietal in general, and the Rioja and La Mancha wine regions of Spain. We specifically mention this Spanish blend from La Mancha, found at private stores: “Cal Y Canto” Tempranillo-Merlot-Syrah
36:27 – 40:33: The Dork is blown away by two white blends from Vancouver Island’s Blue Grouse winery in the Cowichan Valley. Under their “Quill” label, look for the “White” and “Off-Dry White” blends.
40:33 – 47:46: PICK OF THE WEEK! It’s the 90-point Porca de Murca red blend from the Douro region of Portugal. We found it for $13.99.
Sean Hoyne of Victoria’s Hoyne Brewing returns to Dork Uncorked for an episode all about Pilsner. It’s a beer often associated with the sometimes maligned American-style lagers, but it has a long history and a lot to offer.
The pick of the week is (surprise surprise) the Hoyne Pilsner. But we also talk about the “Four Winds Pilsner” from Delta, BC and the “Pilsner Urqell” from Plezen in the Czech Republic.
