B.C. Government marijuana distribution plans – what’s the deal?



Rod Phillips, the Dork, often pulls back the veil on the “bureaucracy of booze” in this province. It turns out the B.C. government plans to recreate that same system when recreational cannabis is legalized in 2018. Rod critiques the decision.

Also, a bit of wine. The Pick of the Week is a sparking wine, which you’ll find in private liquor stores for $11 or $12, the Jean Louis Couve Brut.

Rod also busts the show’s usual price cap for his birthday: The Domaine Antonin Guyon Chorey-les-Beaune from Burgundy.


Vintage Veracity



Rod breaks down which wine regions see a lot of variation from year to year and which ones don’t. Here are a few wine regions discussed that produce consistent wines year after year (with the caveat that there are always exceptions):

Italy: Calabria, Sicily and Puglia
France: Languedoc, Provence
Spain: La Mancha
Portugal: Anything from the Douro Valley and further south
Chile: Anything
Argentina: Anything
South Africa: Anyting

Making our own wine from backyard fruit. Plus, latex glove aroma?



0:00 – 33:24: Warning! This week’s episode takes a detour into home wine making. The “Dork Uncorked” Rod Phillips drops some knowledge as co-host Ryan Price tells of how he attempted to make wine out of his backyard plums and blackberries.

39:00 – 42:38: Rod’s “Pick of the Week.” It’s a Sake called Hakutsuru Superior Junmai Ginjo.

For the record here’s the recipe Ryan cobbled together to make 1 gallon (no guarantee this will be good!):

5 lbs pitted purple plums
2 lbs washed blackberries
3 litres boiling water (I should have put in a bit less)
2.25 lbs white sugar
1 tsp pectic enzyme
1 crushed campden tablet (potassium metabisulfite)

Let sit for a day

1 tsp yeast nutrient
1/2 tsp acid blend (citric acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid)
1 packet wine yeast (this seemed like a lot, but no disaster yet)

The Dork Uncorked, Rod Philips, gives tips form planning the drinks at a wedding, including what kinds of beer and wine to pick and how to handle the cocktails. And, since it fits into the wedding theme, we follow up with Ryan’s anniversary picnic and the wine that went with it.

Gamay Noir Grapes, Cono Sur Brands, and… NAFTA?



0:00 –  15:31: Ryan drank the Louis Latour “Bourgogne Gamay” 2013 from France (about $23), which provided an excuse to explore this variety. For those who also want to explore Gamay, Rod recommends trying an Okanagan option from producers such as Beaumont Family Estate Winery or Volcanic Hills Winery, both in the Kelowna area. Both should be $20 or under.

15:31 – 31:58: Catching up on good wines Rod has tried. We start with the Family Perrin “Cote du Rhone” 2014 for $16. Then we get into Cono Sur from Chile and their “Viento Mar” Block No. 21 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir. Lot’s to get into here.

31:58 – 36:19: Booze in the news — how B.C. wine on grocery store shelves made national and international news… as a NAFTA trade irritant.

36:19 – 38:19: Speaking of Cono Sur from Chile, the pick of the week is their Pinot Noir Rose in a 1-litre bottle.


What’s the deal with wine points? Plus, weather woes and B.C. gin



0:00 – 9:25: More weather woes. A cold wet spring persists for many parts of the world (Vancouver Island as well), what does that mean for wine producers?

9:25 – 20:05: And the best gin is from… B.C.? Long Table Cucumber Gin, made in Vancouver, has just won a best gin award in the United Kingdom.

20:05 – 36:24: “Pick of the Week!” Paxis Red Blend from Portugal. A 90 point wine that should go on sale for $13 or $14 at private liquor stores. This gets us into a discussion on the point system used to rate wines.

36:24 – 43:08: A California pinot noir that made Ryan go “meh.”

0:00 – 4:00: Introducing radio host Terry Moore, who previously hosted a wine talk program with Rod.

4:00 – 27:40: A winding Pinot Noir discussion eventually leads us a Pick of the Week from guest Terry… Burrowing Owl Pinot Noir 2012, which you can only find in restaurants. Terry gets a second pick of the week (because he’s special) Valdo Prosecco.

27:40 – 29:50: Rod’s turn for Pick of the Week is the Renmano Chardonnay from Australia… in the 2-litre box for $18.

29:50 – 42:58: Beer talk! Rod says saison is a beer to watch. We get the history of this brew and Rod suggests you check out Unibroue’s “La fin du Monde” from Quebec, or the “Saison Dupont” from Belgium. Since everyone else got a Pick of the Week, Ryan tags on Vancouver Island Brewery’s new “Sombrio Citrus Session Ale,” a nice pale ale with some hops and a twist of orange peel.


Wine sale alert! And, temperature really matters



On this week’s episode we have a “hot tip.” A number of factors have come together to create crazy wine sales at private liquor stores in British Columbia until the end of the month. Resident Cork Dork Rod recommends three great wines that are usually a little pricey but are currently as little as half price.

•Ruben and Flora, Cabernet Carmenere, France
